City to Conduct Survey
From: City of Ludington
Community Development Department
Beginning June 18, 2010 a survey will be sent out randomly to 1299 city residents in an effort to obtain current household income data.
During the last census the state ranked Ludington at 49.8% of City residents having what the state considers low to moderate income levels. The State funding levels require the City to be at 51% of residents with low to moderate income levels in order for the City to qualify for special programs and additional grant funding and special grant conditions. The survey will determine our cities eligibility for some grant funding that we are hoping to apply for to help pay for our sewer outfall pipe project and the mandatory renovations we are required to make.
As we all know, residents of the City have undergone hardships as the State economy has suffered. It has been ten years since the last census determined the City of Ludington to be at the 49.8% level. With still another 1-2 years until the next census results are conducted and released, the City is unable to access any of the special grant funding or conditions. The survey being conducting is a tool to speed up this determination before the next census. If the results of this survey determine that Ludington has in fact reached the 51% level in the past ten years, the results will be forwarded to the Michigan Economic Development Commission for their review and inclusion in the 51% list. This would then allow us expedited access to additional funding.
Cooperation from everyone who receives a survey is vital to our success as a community in this process. Mailed surveys will be sent in June and are due back in the self addressed stamped envelope provided as soon as possible. After this time we will begin phone calls for any survey's not returned.
